Meet the Designer
White, who holds a bachelor's degree in theatrical science, began his career in the professional theatre, and his background greatly influences his work today. White is known for drawing his inspiration from many creative sources, including nature, science, and his own imagination.
Of course, to design a great kitchen, it helps if you have a passion for the benefits of a great kitchen. A lifelong gourmet chef and wine enthusiast, White's enthusiasm for life's finer pleasures has enhanced his ability to understand the cooking and food preparation needs of his clients.
After founding his business in 1979, White made it a point to learn all aspects of the industry, a decision that has served him well. "I learned how cabinets were made, learned how to use the tools, and learned about the design process from the manufacturer's point of view," he says. "Having that knowledge helps me tremendously today because, as a designer, I have to speak several languages: a trade language on the job site, engineering technology to the plant, and the language of vision with the client."
Kitchen & Bath Design is an interior design business that specializes in all aspects of interior design, including audio/visual wall systems, home offices, libraries, and millwork design, in addition to kitchens and baths, and lighting. White and his staff create wholly integrated working environments, including all areas of the home and commercial projects, such as retail showrooms and product design.
Recognized for his expertise with lighting, he has taught lighting design for the National Kitchen & Bath Association and is a professor of kitchen and bath design for the Interior Designers Institute.
"Lighting creates 50 percent of a room's emotional impact for less than 10 percent of the budget," he says. Using his background in theatrical lighting, White helps clients use lighting to create dramatic interior spaces that highlight a home's unique beauty.
One of the keys to White's success is that he educates his clients on how to look at plans, and he works with them to make decisions on specific products and materials early in the process so the project can be installed smoothly down the road.
White has also been a pioneer for the cause of safety in the kitchen and bath. White's work with the National SAFE KIDS Campaign and the Safe Bath Alliance helped to make the pressure-balanced plumbing valve required by the ADA and now all national building codes, preventing tens of thousands of scald burns annually. "The fact that we have had an influence in stimulating the national building code's requirement of pressure-balanced tub and shower valves is a source of great pride to me," says White.
